Sony A7 III/ Lightroom

I’ve been thinking for a while that I would like to make this blog more interactive but I believe that has to start with me putting forth some initial dialogue in my posts, which I rarely do.  So, for today…here’s a little dialogue.

I recently read a post by Ian from IJM Photography about how Instagram (IG) is no longer geared towards photography as it once was in its early beginnings. It is a great post that gives in depth reasons for this and some alternative media sites that cater more genuinely to creatives and the passion that goes into their works.

On and off over the years I have thought about moving all of my IG content to this blog just for simplicity’s sake and because I am often disappointed in the way my posts fall short due to IG’s horrible algorithm.

One of the things I like best about WordPress is its Reader because it runs chronologically which means I can scroll through everyone’s most recent posts (usually about 40 in a 24 hour period) and reach a point where I see the exact post that I viewed the last time I was on the Reader. As long as I check it every day, I am seeing every post that gets published! IG is not like that and instead chooses what to show you based on who knows what thanks to the mysterious algorithm.

This week after reading Ian’s post, I was really considering abandoning my multiple IG accounts and moving everything to this blog. (I have an IG account for each topic I am interested in including nature photography , ICM photography , migraine , and my photo editing and restoration business .) But then I looked at them more closely and although my post reach isn’t fabulous on IG, I only follow people on each account who post what I do on that particular topic.

So on my nature photography account I only see nature photography posts. On the ICM account I only follow people who also create ICM photos and so on. I realized that because of this I don’t really run into content that I am not interested in or random reels that are off topic like what seems to happen on my personal account which is not topic specific. Additionally, I don’t want to get off of IG and miss seeing all of the posts that I really enjoy from the people I follow.

So I guess I will keep on like I’ve been, posting to my individual IG accounts based on the topic and of course always posting my nature photography here as well because that has been my focus since I started this blog 11 years ago!

What are your thoughts on all of this and how do you handle blogging and other media sites?  I would love to hear!

I feel too many people make blogging a must do instead of I like to do. They make blogging difficult. It shouldn’t be so! They have to have a theme. Here’s a theme idea… The blog is about whatever YOU want to blog about on any given day!
If you want to post some photos? Do it. You want to talk about the latest trip to the grocery store? Do it. Got something on your mind? Post it.
    Why make it soooo complicated???
You want to discuss your bowel habits? Um, that would be TMI!
Got a funny, sad, or boring story (much like this comment) ? Post it.

I don’t have the time to post things on multiple sites or scroll through them. I don’t do FB. Never have. IG? Nope!
Was on Xanga until it died and I moved here. I guess I’m just a boring guy who doesn’t need to share every minute of my life with the Net.
Now excuse me, I have a cat and dogs that are around here someplace that I’m sure are doing what dogs and cats do. I should sleep a bit more. Decide what to eat today and not show the world what it was. Oh, I must not forget to tell y’all about… 😉

Lol, I like the idea of being flexible about things. I think that is my style too. I post when the mood strikes me the same way I create photos. I post very little on my personal accounts and keep my audience to just family. I only have family following on IG (like 30 people). But there’s something about keeping my themes separate that feels good to my brain so I am going to keep that up.

Thanks for mentioning me! I’m glad that what I wrote had some impact. As you read, I have doubts about Instagram, and when I talked to my son about it, he said that people use it for messaging and publishing stories, which is What I mainly do, to share reels of various pieces of music etc. Do I still publish on there? Not really. I’m just letting the account die a nice quiet death.

It is true that My main creative outlet has become my blog, and I feel it has more meaning than IG, at least for me. And meaning is much better for us than likes etc. IG has its place, albeit a diminishing place for many of us. Maybe it’s just a question of putting it into perspective, and stopping it from getting ideas above its station.

Find the medium you like? Find one that serves you and not one that you must serve…

Finding one that serves me and not me serving it makes sense to me. Thanks!
