For well over a decade now I have been photographing all things nature. Landscapes are my favorite but pretty flowers and many trees have made their way into my lens.

I like using a smaller aperture for landscape photos to capture all the details. A large aperture works well for smaller objects such as flowers. This blurs the background and really makes the subject stand out.

I’ve tried my hand here and there at more macro objects such as insects, butterflies, moths and the like. I’ve even tried some bird photography without much luck because I don’t have the right equipment for it, namely a pricey long lens.

A few years ago, I started creating intentional camera movement (ICM) images which are basically just blurry pictures made to look like abstract works of art. I have really enjoyed this genre of photography. Its possibilities are endless!

I also enjoy creating portraits of people using natural light outdoor photography. I even ran a portrait outdoor photography business for a couple of years. I still do this for family and friends when the need arises.

And I can’t forget the years and years I spent taking sports photos of both of my daughters and their volleyball teams. This was one of my greatest joys. I’m kind of sad those days are over.

During one vacation a few years back, I tried some street photography but didn’t feel comfortable enough to continue experimenting with it. It felt sneaky taking pictures of people without their consent or knowledge. It was a little out of my comfort zone but I think it’s an amazing genre of photography.

About a year and a half ago, I became the official photographer of my city’s volunteer program. I take pictures of volunteers performing their duties at various events throughout the year like clearing out dead plants in the fall and planting flowers in the spring, cleaning up all the trash found in creek beds and streams, and sorting boxes and cans at food drives to name a few.

Finally, I have most recently gotten into restoring old photographs on my computer using several software programs including Topaz Photo AI, Photoshop, and Lightroom.

Oh and I almost forgot – I also edit other people’s portrait pictures including those of professional photographers and amateur photographers. This is quite fun since I enjoy the creative process of editing portraits more than actually taking the portraits themselves! (My introverted personality prefers nature subjects over people subjects.)

I don’t know what it says about me having my hand in so many different types of Photography instead of focusing on one primary type. I just love trying to develop my skill level at different creative techniques as it relates to photography.

My next step might be getting into experimenting with film photography but I haven’t made it that far yet.

What types of Photography have you tried and do you find yourself focusing on one type more than another and if so, why?
