It took me two weeks of sifting through about 45 messages inquiring about a piano I was giving away on Marketplace and the Nextdoor app before someone was actually serious enough to come and take the damn thing! The biggest hurdle was that because the piano is so heavy people were not wanting to move it themselves and piano movers are expensive.

My daughter took lessons when she was very young so it hasn’t been played in many years. Also since we have gotten the kittens they bat their little toys under it all of the time and I was having a hard time retrieving them which is what really sparked my motivation to get rid of the piano.

I’m not totally sure what I am going to do with the empty space. I’m thinking maybe a big oversized comfy chair I could sit and read or drink my morning coffee in.

Where the piano used to be

I am in the mindset of spending more money on myself than I ever used to be. Now that my kids are no longer kids but young adults I find myself shifting from “other focused” to “me focused.” As a mom I sacrificed my wants and needs pretty heavily throughout their childhood years and I would never do it differently if I could. But now, as I progress in therapy to treat myself kinder and to not look at self care as being selfish, I am able to allow myself to spend money on the things I want.

With this in mind I have decided to get Invisalign which are clear retainers to straighten my teeth. I used to have very straight teeth without ever needing braces but over the last 15 years or so they have shifted and became crooked on the bottom and one tooth on top has started to rotate some. Most people would probably not do anything to fix this because they really aren’t too bad but I am looking at it as a self care decision to make them straight again which will make it easier to keep them clean as well.

I’m very excited about this but also a little nervous because I am afraid the process may cause some headaches (or migraine attacks). On the other hand, my dentist said that teeth often shift over time because people start grinding their teeth while sleeping. Thinking back to when my teeth started shifting I realized this is around the same time my migraines started! So maybe this will actually help the migraines occur less often. We shall see.

What is new with you?

You’ll have to keep us updated on how the Invisalign affects your headaches. I hope it doesn’t other than to help them go away.

I too had an old (restored) heavy piano that my neighbor gave me. I played it for a while but then it just sat taking space. Eventually, I gave it to my daughter who had space for it. Then she moved and now it sits in the garage of her new home. No one around here wants a free piano, no schools or churches either. So, she’s thinking of moving it to the dump. Luckily, her husband and father-in-law have the strength and vehicle to have moved it a couple of times (and maybe once more).

Yes I had a hard time giving it away and to have it hauled to junk would have cost a couple hundred dollars! I even put out a call out to schools, churches and youth programs with no luck. I’m so glad it finally went. I feel like I got lucky!

Oh gosh – when we bought this house they sold it to us with the piano (but not a stick of other furniture) – they made it sound like they were doing us a favor, but after 5 years we decided to move it on – only to discover that it doesn’t fit up the stairs and would need to be craned off the balcony… no joke! Now it’s basically an enormous beer-coaster! Curious to know how you go with Invisalign (my daughter had it – just tell them you get migraines, so maybe they can make the process a little slower so that the stress on your teeth is less significant each time you change retainers??) Good luck – and enjoy the comfy armchair if you get one! Linda x

Oh my goodness! That is terrible that they sneakily stuck you with the problem of getting rid of it. I’ll keep you posted on the Invisalign. Fingers crossed.

I’ll cross my fingers too (they’re adding Botox injections to my jawline later this week – I’ll let you know how that goes too.) L xx

Thank you, Sheila, there is bridge work and some very old fillings that need to be replaced which were installed in the 1970s! Yeah, time flies…

Ugh, I had all my old silver fillings replaced within the last few years. Had to get crowns on those teeth. We are showing our age, lol

I sure am and will never ask a woman her age, that’s taboo where I come from! I’m 65 in December. 😂
