I recently saw a post by Dave Wegiel Photography about something I had never heard of: Snokeh! As Dave describes this technique, you “use your flash to accentuate the out of focus snow in the foreground. The snow and bokeh combine to be called snokeh.”
So when it snowed during blizzard like conditions at my home, I had to try my hand at capturing some snokeh using my Sony a7 III.

Dave mentions that it works best with a darker background to contrast with the white snokeh. I was limited to the views directly outside of my house since we were snowed in and I couldn’t go anywhere. So, I used this tree in my backyard as a subject and I think the snokeh showed up nicely.

We got about six inches of a snow/sleet mix at the time of me writing this (Sunday January 5th at 6pm) and they are forecasting another 3-5 inches of snowfall tonight!

The weather is supposed to stay very cold this week so the snow should stay around for a while which is good news because then I can make it out to take some snowy landscape pictures once the roads are cleared. Often times, in my region, the snow comes and then mostly melts the next day because temperatures warm back up quickly.
