Lens-artists Challenge #347 – break the rules

This week for the Lens artist challenge Ritva says, “…in order to break a rule, you must know that there is a rule in the first place!”

I looked up some common photography rules and found a recent photo I made that I believe breaks all these rules!

Here are the rules I broke, albeit unintentionally, in this photo:

1. Rule of Thirds: Divide the frame into a 3×3 grid and place key elements along the lines or at their intersections.

2. Leading Lines: Use natural lines (roads, fences, shadows) to guide the viewer’s eye toward the subject.

3. Framing: Use objects (windows, trees, arches) to frame the subject and draw attention to it.

4. Symmetry and Patterns: Center symmetrical scenes or emphasize repeating patterns for visual appeal.

5. Fill the Frame: Get close or zoom in to remove distractions and focus on the subject.

6. Negative Space: Leave empty space around the subject to highlight it and create mood or simplicity.

7. Depth: Create layers using foreground, subject, and background to give a sense of three-dimensionality.

8. Rule of Odds: Groups of three or five tend to be more visually pleasing than even-numbered groupings.

9. Background Control: Choose a simple or complementary background that doesn’t compete with the subject.

10. Lighting Awareness: Pay attention to the direction, quality, and color of light. Golden hour (just after sunrise or before sunset) often gives the best light.

I tend to take photos that break these rules while I am walking through a wooded area because there is no defined single subject, symmetry, negative space or simple background. There is just a beautiful scene of nature at her best – strong upright trees interspersed with fallen ones, growth among decay, and a sense of becoming lost in the web of branches.

Do you have a photo that breaks the “rules”? Join in the challenge and let us see!

Sheila, that was an excellent point you made with this photo. I am also guilty of having done that. Sometimes, a forest is messy and begs for a photo.

Thank you! Yes I love the forest and just want to capture its messy beauty but it is just not the same as being there and taking in the whole totality of the experience.

Sheila, nature forgives photographers when they take photos of the great outdoors. Nature herself breaks many rules, so she understands. 🙂

Yes I suppose she does go breaking some rules sometimes 😊

Sheila, my “rule of thumb” is not to even know the rules that others set as guidelines. My “eye” tells me how to compose a shot and that is my main “rule”. Following rules instead of just having fun and being in awe of the magic around you, no thank you!!

AmyRose, I feel the exact same way! I had to look up the “rules” to see what I may have been breaking lol

Spring in the forest, such a lovely time. Forests, nature does not abide the rules. Getting a shot that would follow so many rules would be impossible. Rules aside, the composition in this works well and it tells the story of the cluttered nature we should try to keep.

Thank you Ritva. It was an enjoyable challenge to join. I love how nature shows us that there is no need to be “perfect”. Everything is a beautiful mess as is, most humans included.

welcome to our challenge Sheila! I’m with Ritva – can you imagine trying to capture an image that checks all of those boxes! The best photographers capture what they love and Mother Nature NEVER disappoints ! A lovely capture, rules or no rules.

Thank you! I usually find a picture that is in my queue to be posted when looking for one to fit the challenge so there is not but one or two at the time.

I love a messy forest, that is how they are 🙂 And we capture that rawness, not caring for rules. Great photo, Sheila.

You’re right about knowing the rules before breaking or even bending them. Fundamentals and foundation first! 😊

    Rules? Screw the rules! Lol
We don’t see by the rules, so why photograph by them? Usually I am taking a pic of what I see. The camera doesn’t always capture what I see, so that is what editing is for. 😉

I agree. If I had to think about rules I wouldn’t enjoy it as much.

I think being taught the rules if you’re new to photography helps you “see” better. Too often we look at something, but we really don’t “see” it.
I hope you are feeling better from the headaches.
